Recycled Asphalt
Recycled asphalt pavement (RAP) is milled or crushed asphalt from roads and parking lots, processed to a ¾" minus gradation. Unlike crushed rock or gravel, RAP contains residual asphalt binder that reactivates under traffic and heat — causing the material to knit together and form a semi-solid surface over time. This self-binding property makes it a popular low-cost alternative to new asphalt for driveways and unpaved lots.
RAP compacts readily, sheds water well, and resists rutting better than plain gravel in high-traffic areas. It performs best in direct sunlight where solar heat can activate the binder.
Common applications: residential and commercial driveways, unpaved parking areas, ranch and farm roads, temporary construction access roads, and low-speed haul roads.
